An antique 19th-century jackfruit wood set of doors from Kerala in South India. There are two distinct styles of Kerala doors found. This is less common with heavy iron use and a central carved handle. This handle is an intricately carved panel depicting a Yali guardian figure, floral motifs, and elephants.
These traditional doors from Kerala adorn the entrances of historical Ettukettu and Nalukettu homes. They're saved from buildings in India that have fallen into a state of disrepair. This example still has its original house number painted on it - #96.
The doors themselves are beautifully carved from the very hardwearing jackfruit wood. This is a medium hardwood with desirable characteristics for furniture making such as being termite-proof and resistant to fungus.
